In June 2024, Netflix plans to release Supacell, a significant new British production. Together with Rapman, the streamer is creating a new series that centers on a gang of Black superpowers. Below is everything the information we currently know about Netflix’s Supacell, including the premiere date, first glimpses, and other details regarding the long-gestating series.
Known by his stage moniker Rapman, Andrew Onwubolu will be directing and writing the new six-part series. Among his credits are Blue Story, American Son, and the trilogy of short films based on Shiro’s Story. Rapman will collaborate on productions with New Wave artists Mouktar Mohammed and Henrietta Lee, an associate producer.
Vice president of Netflix’s U.K. series, Anne Mensah, made the following observation when the series was first commissioned:
Apart from the fact that Supacell will be a science fiction superhero series, not much is known about the plot. This is the logline for Supacell on Netflix:
“I know the superhero genre, 100% that’s been done to death, but Supacell is different – it’s a superpower drama about normal people, real people, not people that are martyrs, not people that are going to save the world, just people that try to save themselves and their families,” Rapman said in an interview with SFX Magazine/TotalFilm/GamesRadar about the series’ potential to overcome so-called superhero fatigue. Exactly what a regular person would do.
During the Next on Netflix UK event in early 2024 (and the announcement week that followed), Netflix gave us a sneak peek at the upcoming series:
